I think Karen was in the true prime of her life at the time she was working for the TGI Friday's chain, as a trainer. After living away for fifteen years she was traveling on the company's dime and training the staff at brand new franchise stores on trademark TGIF customer service procedures and kitchen procedures, and they happened to be opening the 28th street TGI Friday's in Grand Rapids. Karen was the queen at the grand opening practice-run, where she and all staff members invited their families to enjoy the full menu on the house at a Sunday brunch. Classical music blared out like rock and roll, and everyone was amazed to see this new restaurant (Ohmigod: a traffic light on the wall? What zany decorating idea will they try next?), Karen marching about like a coach. After a long estrangement from her family, we got to watch her doing purposeful work, being in command, and earning the affection of her trainees.
